Maple
Sculpted in zinc
Hatch + Mason designed and managed a ground-floor extension and loft conversion of a terraced property in the heart of Hackney, belonging to a couple and their young son. The owners had a dream of adopting a second child and sought a home that could accommodate their growing family. Rather than moving to a larger space, they desired a renovation that would make their current house more functional, comfortable, and suitable for their needs.

Our role was to guide them through this renovation journey, ensuring that we could help them achieve their goal of expanding their family without the need to relocate.
The ground floor extension was designed to increase the living space on the lower level, creating a more open and functional area for family life. The design was focused on making sure that the extension felt seamless with the original structure while incorporating modern elements to improve flow and functionality.
One of the standout features of this renovation was the loft conversion. While few houses on the road had successfully implemented loft conversions, we worked within the guidelines to create a bespoke solution that maximised the space available.
This project explores how materials can be pushed in simple, honest ways to achieve expression and purpose. Sculpted zinc frames the new extension, with its crisp folds and careful joints sitting in quiet contrast to the original terrace. Reclaimed London stock brickwork is used as the infill to soften the composition and match the original house and wider conservation area. A straightforward, crafted use of materials that feels both confident and familiar.
We focused on restoring original features and incorporating new design elements that respected the house’s heritage, blending old and new to create a home that felt both timeless and contemporary.
