Darney
Crafted in stone

Soon to be completed, this full renovation and extension is designed for a growing family, balancing modern function with nods to both contextual and personal heritage. A new basement provides space for shared family activities, while the interiors use warm tones and textured materials to create a practical and comfortable home.

The extension is built using Darney Heritage Stone Bricks, supplied by Hutton Stone - a low-carbon alternative to traditional fired clay bricks. Made from surplus stone and cut using custom machinery, they carry roughly 25% of the embodied carbon of standard bricks. The choice reflects the clients’ Scottish roots and references the sandstone architecture found across Scotland.

Variations in bond, including on-end and soldier courses, highlight the tone and texture of the stone. The extension’s rectilinear form contrasts with the sweeping curves and softer details found throughout the interiors.
