Not every home has the chance to create its own backdrop. The Lantern is designed around that idea. A small structure that shapes the view as much as it serves as an extension of the home. By day, it forms a calm, crafted edge to the garden and by night, it becomes a soft, sculptural glow that enhances the garden landscape.
A crafted, light-filled studio that balances simplicity with atmosphere. The roof is clad in Western Red Cedar shingles, ageing gracefully over time, while the interior’s warm palette and mezzanine level create a flexible place to work and retreat. At night the structure becomes a lantern for the garden, quietly animating the space around it.
The asymmetric roof form shapes the interior, allowing a mezzanine to sit comfortably within the volume and providing space for storage accessed by a simple timber ladder. Timber plays a central role throughout the scheme, rafters are left exposed beneath the mezzanine and steel beams remain visible, giving the studio an inherent sense of character. This combination of warm materials and revealed structure creates a compact yet expressive space that feels both functional and quietly crafted.
