Gridstone
Calm by design
This house embodies a holistic approach to architecture and well-being. What began as a traditional two-up, two-down has evolved into a thoughtfully designed four-bedroom home with a ground-floor extension and a tranquil garden outbuilding called ‘The Lantern.’ More than a renovation, this project is a testament to the belief that a healthy living space promotes overall well-being, a core principle guiding our practice.

Every aspect of the design has been meticulously crafted with the belief that small, intentional changes can lead to big, positive impacts. This includes the use of materials such as breathable lime plaster that resists mould and promotes a healthier indoor climate, as well as a novel SISALWOOL insulation, chosen for its minimal environmental footprint, breathable qualities, and exceptional thermal properties.
The transformation reflects a commitment to creating spaces that nurture both people and the environment. Every aspect of the design has been meticulously crafted with the belief that small, intentional changes can lead to big, positive impacts.

One of the standout features of the new extension is the brickwork, crafted from Heritage Portland Stone bricks.
In the making for over 140 million years, these cutouts of 'unloved stone' have a significantly lower carbon footprint than traditional clay-fired bricks, making them an environmentally conscious choice.
The existing bricks on site, which date back to 1928 when the property was built, were also given a new lease of life. Each brick was carefully cleaned by hand and reused in the garden landscaping, further minimising waste.
The project celebrates natural light and air quality. An MVHR system ensures clean air throughout the house creating a serene and energy-efficient living environment.
Light percolation is prioritised throughout the design, fostering a sense of openness and tranquillity.
