Mid-century, homegrown

Currently nearing the end of its construction phase, this project transforms a Victorian property by merging the ground-floor and lower-ground-floor flats into a cohesive home in West London.

Every architectural sweep and curve echoes mid-century forms. This design language is influenced by the clients' existing collection of period furniture, with its characteristic curves and textures resonating throughout both external and interior spaces. We translated these inspirations into a seamless dialogue between function and the elegance of the era.

An open tread staircase leads up to the former kitchen turned study, creating a quiet retreat for reading or work. To unlock the full potential of the property, extensive structural work has been carried out, underpinning the building to raise the ceiling height of the lower ground floor. This once damp, underutilised space has been reimagined as the heart of the home— a stunning mid-century-inspired kitchen and living area.

Rooted in the mid-century character of the owners’ furniture and love of gardening, it transforms a divided Victorian house into a fluid, light-filled home. Merging structure, craft, and landscape, the design bridges eras with sculpted curves, honest materials, and a sustainable spirit.

At the time of the project’s conception, the garden was already a prominent feature. Through careful planning, the meandering paths and the layout were revisited to create pockets of rest and productivity. With both of the owners being very keen gardeners, the garden is an inseparable part of their home, and the design seeks to celebrate and enhance this.

The lush garden views and meticulous curation of the spaces are complemented by the team’s commitment to incorporating climate resilience into the build. The integration of a rainwater harvesting system is set to support the project and the clients’ love for gardening well into the future.

One of the project’s standout elements is the arched tunnel on the ground floor. This architectural feature serves as a pivotal transitional space, connecting the original Victorian house with newly designed areas. Beginning at this tunnel, characterised by its elegant curved doors, the journey flows effortlessly from Victorian heritage into a realm inspired by mid-century design.

A mid-century-inspired kitchen, designed in collaboration with The Main Company, showcases bespoke finishes, materials, and textures that reflect the clients’ passion for the era.

This design balances functionality with aesthetic appeal, enhancing the flow and purpose of the home’s spaces.
